James' Jail Cell

I have come to realize you have to be smarter than your children. Within the last few weeks when I would put James down for his nap, instead of walking into a sleeping child, I would walk into a tornado. He would slide out the drawers on the changing table, take out ALL the clothes and scatter them all over the floor and then use the empty drawers to get up on the changing table part. (Yes, this whole unit is bolted to the wall.) Then, he would get into the diaper changing supplies - his favorite being the BABY POWDER and then dump it ALL OVER the clothes on his floor and of course the carpet!

I have now become smarter than him and stripped his room of anything that he could turn into a mess.

Notice no diaper changing supplies up by the wipes warmer and NO drawers!

Of course, this might be his new nap area! Notice the baby powder smeared on the back wall of the changing table behind his head. How did he get that there last week? That was behind the drawers?!

All his clothes now live in his closet. Notice how Mom is smart and put a child saftey thing on the handle so he can't get into the closet?

Notice the hooks on the wall? There used to be a cute quilt hanging there but instead of fighting putting it BACK UP after every nap, I am just leaving it down! One less thing now on my list!

The bed...nothing on it but Barney and Tad.

So yes, it is basically like a jail cell - a bed and toilet (diapers). Other than that, there is NOTHING and I won't have a big mess to clean up every day after the nap! I am so glad my smart neighbor suggested for me to GET A BRAIN and become smarter than him!!!

Snow Days and Lost Teeth

Rachel & James in the bath! Bubbles and good times! Notice Rachel's missing tooth! Jason pulled it out with the needle nose pliers. Gross!

I went to card group - where we make 30 handmade cards and then trade then trade them with 30 other gals. I came home at 9:30 pm thinking that Jason would have the kids in bed....their own not ours!!!

James' first experience with snow. We got him dressed and then took him outside. He just stood there, got cold and then wanted to come inside!

Here is a close up of the missing tooth!

Here is the puppy....there went the puppy. She is probably 60 lbs and there is NO way I could even attempt to pick her up! She is already bigger than Sammi was when she was full grown!

Pregnant and SICK!!!

Here is Rachel's first day of First Grade at Kaysville Elementary. She loves her teachers and is one of 4 kids that tested into AR reading. It is amazing how fast she learns!

Here is our CRAZY boy who loves the phone and has complete conversations with no one on the other side of the phone! The dirty face picture is after he licked the beaters from Grandma Sue's birthday cake!

Here is Rachel at her first soccer game of the season. This year they have a goalie so the coach rotated the girls in the goal. Rachel had the opportunity to be in goal and she liked it!! I hate things flying at my face so I know she doesn't get this from me!
Here are the other updates....
I am 14.5 weeks pregnant and have been SICK, SICK and more SICK. This pregnancy has been worse than any others and to top it off, the only things that settle my stomach are greasy foods and Coke. I am PRAYING that I start feeling better soon so I can get back to eating healthy so I don't gain 100 lbs!
My foot from the snowmobile accident still had been hurting so I had a specialist look at it a few weeks ago and he said the solutions are surgery or months in the boot again. I am going for the less invasive route an figure this boot will be on until December at the earliest. At least it doesn't hurt when I walk on it, it just hurts when I touch it.
Rachel is LOVING tumbling and was just moved into the intermediate class at Clay's tumbling. she can do a back walkover and can go down in a back bend and then stand back up again....wow those stomach muscles! School is going well for her and she loves to jump rope.
James is.....???? I don't know the right words to use for him. He is tooooo smart. He watches everything I do - how to turn on the car and knows the where the keys go and that the gear shift should move - how to pull up and down the blinds and that the cord is the key so he pushes his scooter, stool or whatever might get him high enough to reach the cord.....the list goes on and on. The most recent discovery was the water that comes out of the door of the fridge. He can put a cup up to the lever, get water in the cup and then either dump the water on the floor or back in the drawer where he got the cup. Since our fridge doesn't have a lock for the water/ice, we have turned the water off to the fridge until he stops this MADNESS. The only problem is that he is not doing all of this to be mischievous or naughty, he is just learning. And his smile is too cute and his personality is so sweet. I am realizing how different boys and girls truly are. (Rachel hopes this new baby is a girl so we don't have another wild boy!)
Jason is working hard, hard hard. The business is ever changing and they are going to be filming a TV commercial in the upcoming months. Since there are more building permits being pulled than before, there is a ton of business out there and they are busy trying to get more new accounts.

Delayed Posting

If you notice the last post was about the puppy...well I don't believe in animal cruelty but if I did...this "puppy" would not be alive anymore! Ha Ha! We have begun puppy training class but it never goes as quickly as you would like. The older Sadie gets, the more she looks like Sammi and it gives me bitter sweet feelings. I hope that she will be as well behaved as Sammi but it also makes me sad that she is gone.

As for the kids...I realize that I take so many more pictures of James than Rachel because he is always doing crazy things that I want on camera. Sweet Rachel just does what she is supposed to which makes blackmail pictures to use on a wedding video for her are almost impossible to take these days!

We had Rachel's Clytie Adams ballet performance 2 weeks ago and she was in this cute little silver outfit. I will attach later! She is having fun going to summer camps and every morning she wants to know which friend can play or who's house she is going to go to! The problem is she doesn't quite get that you don't call a friend's house and ask if you can play there!

OHHHH....big news! Rachel lost her first tooth 3 weeks ago. We had MANY crying episodes that she and one other girl in her kindergarten class were the ONLY KIDS ON THE PLANET who hadn't lost any teeth yet. Then when the front one on the bottom became lose, she only wiggled it a bit. We got in the car after swimming lessons and she said matter-a- factly, "My tooth is really loose. I think I am going to pull it out." Then she reached in and ripped it out. I almost threw up! I was the type that would wiggle my tooth until it was hanging by a thread and fell out. I NEVER had what it took to pull it out. Then that night, we put it in the little tooth fairy pillow that we had already had for months in anticipation for that day! In the morning, she found a dollar in the pillow. The next few days when she showed people the hole in her mouth, they all would ask what the tooth fairy left. She would say, "I only got a dollar!" ONLY...!!!!Of course every adults response was that they only got a nickle or a quarter! It was funny!

Also, Rachel has changed from North Davis Gymnastics to Clay's Tumbling. In 3 weeks (3 times going to class) she can do a 1 handed cartwheel and round off perfectly, has almost nailed her back walkover and is close to being able to pull herself up from a front walkover. It is amazing how with appropriate instruction, how quick she has picked up on all of that. After 1 year at North Davis, all she could do was a cartwheel! She may be our little tumbler!!! We aren't sure if she will be our little ballerina because at her age all they do is skip around and jump in circles!!!

As for James, his vocabulary is advancing daily. His language is changing from Chinese to English! He obviously says Mom, Mommy, Dad, Daddy and ChaeChul (Rachel)! Then he has been saying no, out (when he wants out of the high chair), don't (when you are doing something he doesn't like), dink for drink, shoe and every time you said we are going bye bye he says, "shoe" and goes into his room to grab shoes. He also says outside, bye bye, car, carseat, good girl - to the dog, tantu for thank you, bless you when you sneeze, nummy for yummy, cereal for anything you put in a bowl for him, ni nite for goodnight, sleep when he wants to go to sleep, uh oh when he drops anything, NO said in loud volumes, baby which he says when you lay him down to change his diaper because he wants you to give him the picture of him as a baby for him to look at, eye and then he pokes you in the eye, boo for peek a boo, book, bite when he wants a bit of whatever you are eating, gama for grandma, papa for grandma, and I will have to add more as I remember them!

Also, every time he toots...he puts his arm in the air and pulls it down like he is pulling a train horn and says, "toot toot" really loud. It is quite the crowd pleaser! Of course, his Dad (I say his Dad, not my husband because I don't like to claim him on this one!) is the one that taught him this little stunt! Somehow the "toot toot" has now also adapted to every time he burps too?!

James NEVER stops moving. I am chasing him constantly. Within two seconds he is up on the table dancing or stomping or is sitting up on the kitchen counter. A few weeks ago Ryan and Christie were here and all the sudden we noticed James wasn't behind us. He had gone into my office, climbed up on the chair and was SITTING on the wireless keyboard in front of my laptop and had the phone up to his ear! I don't think Rachel learned how to climb on anything until last week! She was and still is so calm and easily entertained where James has a 20 second attention span and is always moving!

My birthday was on July 1 - the big 34 and Jason and I went to the movies. We saw Get Smart and had a good laugh. Then on the 3rd we went to Alicia's (Jason's sister's house) to swim and celebrate my birthday with his family. On the 4th we went to the Bees Baseball game with my his family and my Dad. My Mom has been sick with Bronchitis for over a week running fevers and has been in bed since last Saturday when they got home from their Alaska Cruise.

I have started doing rehabs in Saginaw with some business partners and Jason is still trucking along with the cabinet/carpet company. They broke last year's sales in the end of May! They are doing phenomenal, it just takes a while to dig out of the whole you create when building that large of a company. Last week they bought a $40K water filtration system that they had to get or the EPA could shut them down. They use a lot of water cutting the granite and the water needs to be cleaned before it is dumped?? I don't know all the details, it just has to be done!

It has been tough financially for our family to make this all work and it has taken some fenangling to make it happen but the things I am noticing are that everyone in my immediate family and remote family are all healthy. Everyone around me has illness plaguing their children, parents or has a rocky marriage and we don't have any of that! If we could chose our trials, I would take financial all day long over many of the others that are out there. I know on any given days Jason would say I am his trial or vice versa but overall, we are very happy and blessed with wonderful children. We love where we live, we love seeing his business continuing to grow and make money on a daily basis and couldn't ask for a lot more! (Except for the money tree to start growing in the back yard or the concrete in our driveway to stop sinking!!!)

The New Puppy Sadie

The first night at home!!!

The baby stroller is not going to last long!
She will be huge in no time!

I have to hide James' bottle from her

Let me tell you how this happened - about 3 weeks ago I get an email from Jason with 6 pictures attached with the subject as "Check these out". As I scanned through the pictures, they were pictures of a chocolate lab puppy. Being uninterested because I was NOT interested in having a puppy with a 16 month old child, I scanned quickly and stopped on the last one considering divorce. The last picture was of Jason holding that chocolate lab puppy.

Of course Jason and Rachel were in cahoots on this whole thing and I hadn't noticed was the pink bow behind the dog's ear. Rachel had gone through her hair bows and given it to Jason to put on "our" puppy when he put the deposit down.

If you can not hear the bitterness and resentment in my voice...it is there! Unfortunately Sadie is darling and when she is tired will cuddle up with you! Yes, we are dealing with puppy issues - biting ankles, attacking James when he falls over, occasional potty problems in the house but I am glad we will be able to start her in obedience classes in 5 weeks! Right now life is just a free for all around here!

She is cute isn't she!!!???

Our/My Almost Fatal/Bad Scene Snowmobile Trip

Ryan and Christie

Me and Rachel on our way

All of us

Where I fell through the ice

The snowmobile hanging!

The three of us

Me and Christie

Me and Jason

We went up to Ryan and Christie's in Wyoming for my first snowmobile adventure. We almost didn't go because I had things I needed to get done with work...but we went anyway. Saturday morning we headed out for an all day ride - Ryan, Christie, Christie's Mom and Dad, Christie's Sister & friend, and then Jason, Rachel and me.

About 45 minutes into the ride (just as I was starting to feel confident) we were heading down a hill that had small bumps and a bridge at the bottom so we could cross the river. I gassed it a bit too much over the bumps and got off the trail into the powder and stopped so I wouldn't go down the hill into the river. I was about 7 feet away from the bridge. I waved Ryan over to help me get out of the powder and then the brilliant thought came to mind of Ryan's directions of how to get unstuck. Lean, keep giving it gas and you'll get out. Because I had already waved Ryan over to help me, I guess he was walking toward me from behind. At that moment, I cranked the handlebars to the left to get back on the trail while giving it spurts of gas. Once I was headed in the correct direction, I cranked it hard to the right and by mistake grabbed the gas. I got on the bridge but couldn't make the turn and both the snowmobile and I went off the opposite side of the bridge.

The only thing I remember was shutting my eyes, feeling the back of the helmet hit something hard (which was the ice on the top of the river) and then my body getting wet. I opened my eyes and saw that I was chest deep in the river water and wasn't sure if I was standing on the bottom of the river or a rock that was about to give way. Just like the movies I was grabbing at the ice with my gloves and had nothing to grab onto fearing if I slipped, I was going to go under the ice. The only thing I could reach was the 4 foot wall of snow that was originally the bank of the river so that didn't help. The next thing I see is Ryan running through thigh high snow yelling to me if I was ok. I just kept saying, "I can't get out." Ryan laid in the snow to extend his hand to me and we could barely reach each other. With one pull, he pulled me 4 feet up the snow bank. Ryan would tell you he is buff but it think pure adrenaline pulled 130 lbs of dead weight out of the water with one arm!

I then realized that the snowmobile hadn't crushed me like it should have and then pinned me under 3 feet of water. I turned around and saw the snowmobile hanging by one ski off the bridge which saved my life or saved me from doing time in the hospital. Also....this shows to always wear your helmet because if not, I would probably be in a coma or have brain damage because the back of my head is what hit the ice first and it was about an 8 foot fall. Overall, I pulled some muscles/bruised my ankle because it was caught in the foot spot on the snowmobile and when the snowmobile stopped and I kept going, my foot twisted and it hurt to walk on for quite a few days. I have a bruise the size of a grapefruit on my hip which is the second part of my body that hit the ice after my head hit first.

I am lucky to have walked away and yes...I rode the rest of the day (after having to take off every article of clothing because I was completely wet.) Luckily it was a nice sunny day and everyone had worn extra clothing so I borrowed pieces of clothing from everyone and just rode commando all day!

If you are wondering how they got the snowmobile back up for me to ride (and no, there was not damage to the snowmoblie either) I remember Ryan saying,"I'm waiting for any creative ideas to get this thing back up on the bridge without it crashing in the water." While I was peeling off wet clothes, Ryan and Cody (Christie's sister) went down on the ice and pushed up on the bottom ski while everyone else stood on the bridge with ropes or their hands pulling on what ever they could grab and they got it up! I wish I had gotten pictures of that but I was too woried about hypothermia at that point!

Our Sammi Dog 10/01 - 2/4/08

Our last picture with Sammi right before we left to put her down. The red bandage on her leg is where the IV had been all weekend.

We have had a huge loss in our family. Our beloved dog - who felt like a family member to us - has passed on. She started throwing up last Tuesday and we realized she hadn't eaten since Monday.

On Wednesday we called our Vet - Dr Pam Nichols in Bountiful @ The Animal Care Center - http://www.utahanimalcare.com/ saying she was shaking and throwing up and they said to bring her in Thursday AM.

We brought her in on Thursday and they did an xray of her hips and her back because she was exhibiting pain. They found a slipped disk in her back and sent us home with pain medication.

On Friday she was still throwing up and I called the vet. She said to keep giving her the pain medication. Sammi wouldn't eat so I had to crush up the pills and put them in a water bottle and squirt it in her mouth. She couldn't even keep the water down.

Saturday afternoon she was still throwing up and becoming lathargic so we took her to an emergency care Vet close by - Dr. White in Farmington (since our Vet is closed on the weekend) and he said her liver was shutting down and how he could see that was that the whites of her eyes were bright yellow and so were her gums which is jaundice. He put her on an IV to rehydrate her and pumped her full of antibiotics. He kept her overnight and told us he would follow up in the morning.

We got a call Sunday that he had done bloodwork and it didn't look good. He hoped that another day on the antibiotics and IV would help fix what ever was going on. He thought maybe she had eaten something and gotten Hepatitis.

On Monday morning he called us and said her bloodwork was worse and that now her kidneys were failing as well. She still wasn't keeping anything down and was in a lot of pain. I drove down to Dr Pam to get her opinion and she sat and cried with me. She said that if you look at this same scenario with a human, if they had been on an iv for over 48 hours and pumped full of antibiotics and bloodwork showed that organs were shutting down, then you are looking at something major and she figured cancer. She sat with me and cried and asked if we would bring Sammi down to her office to let her be the one to put her down. She also asked if she could keep her and open her up to see what really was happening to her body. We brought her home around noon and it was awful. She kept going outside and eating snow so she could throw up. She was shaking horribly. I finally got her to come inside and lay on the floor with me. When I was petting her, trying to ease her pain, her hair was falling out in handfulls because of the dehydration. Her breathing was so shallow I knew she was close to death.

Austin Eborn came over and Jason, Austin and I took her to Dr. Pam's office. By the time we got there, she was moaning with every breath because she was in so much pain. First they gave her a sedative and then laid her in Jason's lap. We were all sitting on the floor and Dr Pam sat there crying with us. Dr. Pam told us to say our goodbyes and it was so hard because she was still wagging her tail at us. Then she gave her the medication to put her to sleep and it didn't even take 1/10 of the medication for her to stop breathing. Once Jason and I said our goodbyes, Austin knelt on the floor with Sammi's face in his hands and had his face buried in hers sobbing. It was so awful. We finally left and came home. We set Sammi's collar and leash on the counter and Jason went back to work and Rachel kept playing with Abby Kennedy. A while later I heard Sammi's tags on her collar jingling and I jumped out of reflex/fear/question. Rachel had taken Sammi's collar into her room and had been sitting on her floor crying. She kept asking why the doctor couldn't save Sammi.

Later that night, Rachel struggled to go to bed because Sammi would lay on the foot of her bed every night and Rachel would tuck her feet under Sammi. Rachel asked us to lay pillows at the foot of her bed so it would feel like Sammi was still there. I thought after our tramatic day was over, Tuesday would be easier. In the morning, it almost felt worse because we didn't hear Sammi's collar jingle from Rachel's room as she was waking up ready to be let outside. Then as the day went on, I realized how much of my daily routine included taking Sammi out, letting her out the door when I knew Rachel would be walking down the street ater getting off the bus, etc. THIS IS THE DOG THAT I DIDN'T EVEN WANT THAT JASON BROUGHT HOME ANYWAY!!! Jason was supposed to be having a harder time than me!!!

I got a call from Dr. Pam in the afternoon that when she had opened Sammi up Monday night, that there was cancer all over. It had not only taken her liver and kidneys but her spleen as well. Again relating to a human, they would have said that the person had 3 months to live but with a dog you have to divide that by 7 because they age so much quicker than us. That is why it only took 1 week to go from sickness to death. We are grateful to have such a caring Vet and appreciated her concern for us during our sadness.

As I am washing the cover to her bed, the blanket on the end of Rachel's bed and putting away her leash and dog toys, I am so sad but glad that she is out of pain. At this point, I am too sad to even think about another dog where Jason is ready to get a puppy tomorrow! We will start thinking about another dog in the summer but for now, we are happy with our wonderful memories of our great Sammi dog!

We love you Sammi!
